The Canyons

The Canyons are one of the best kept secrets in greater Los Angeles, with a relaxed country vibe and easy access to everything the city has to offer. Several distinct canyons connect the Westside neighborhoods to the San Fernando Valley, providing green space and an opportunity to avoid using freeways during times of high congestion. These areas provide buyers with a chance to have a large home in a private, natural setting, with space from the neighbors and an exclusive location.

Generally speaking, residents of the canyons can be on the beach or in the city in a matter of minutes. This is why many say that living in the canyons provides owners with the best of both worlds—the chance to live in a serene, private area that is free from the hustle and bustle, yet still close enough to enjoy all of the amenities the city has to offer.

Life in the Canyons

Several communities offer buyers a chance to live in a beautiful single family home, tucked away in a canyon. Beachwood Canyon is an older area that has traditionally been more popular with professionals from the entertainment industry. Beachwood Canyon is located in the Hollywood Hills area and features its own market, cafe, florists and more. Film directors have favored the area for its natural beauty and close proximity to Hollywood, so it’s not surprising that numerous films, such as the original “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” were filmed here.

Nichols Canyon starts at the south end of Hollywood Boulevard and runs north to Mulholland Drive. Over the years it has been home to numerous celebrities and notables, attracted by the spring-fed creek and waterfalls that can be found in the area. With freshwater sources available, Nichols Canyon is also a favorite hotspot for several types of wildlife, including frogs, deer, rabbits, and hawks.

Laurel Canyon is an important link between West Hollywood, Hollywood, Central L.A. and the San Fernando Valley. There are many residential real estate offerings available in the area, a favorite locale for rock stars back in the 1960s.

Coldwater Canyon runs perpendicular to and over the central Santa Monica Mountains. It is home to Cold water Canyon Park, which offers 45 acres of green space, incredible natural beauty and miles of hiking trails.

Franklin Canyon is a favorite destination for local residents and visitors in the know. The area has a 605 acre park, complete with a three acre lake, a duck pond and five miles of hiking trails. Franklin Canyon has appeared in numerous films and TV shows as a result of its natural beauty and proximity to the city. It is not uncommon to spot a variety of wildlife in the park, such as frogs, rabbits, squirrels, snakes, coyotes and bobcats.

Benedict Canyon runs from north to south, connecting Beverly Hills to the San Fernando Valley. It has been home to numerous celebrities over the years, including Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Murphy, and Cher. There are several types of real estate available in Benedict Canyon, from smaller single family homes to grand estates.

Beverly Glen Canyon is a critical connection between the UCLA/Westwood area and the San Fernando Valley. During times of high congestion on the freeways, this is a popular route for anyone who prefers to use surface streets and avoid sitting in traffic.
